How To Support Your Child's
Transition From Home To Nursery

It can be safely said that the majority of parents worry about the first time their child goes to a nursery. So many questions and thoughts run through your mind: Will they settle in easily? Will I have to leave them crying? Will they ever arrive smiling and walking through the doors independently? Don't worry too much.

Here are some techniques you can use to help ease the transition from home to nursery:
  • Talk positively about the Nursery to your child
  • Look together at the brochure or the website so that they are familiar with the pictures of the surroundings and talk about things they might do at the nursery and how exciting that will be
  • Perhaps you can make several journeys to the setting location, pointing out the route and the buildings/landmarks along the way so that your child becomes familiar
  • You could ask your child to help you find the Nursery together, giving them ownership and a sense of purpose.
This helps your child immensely as they will start to point out things to you.

Settling In

To settle your child in first we will invite you and your child for a one hour settling in session so you can both explore the surroundings together and get to know the staff and your child's key-worker. This will allow you and your child to start to build positive relationships with our nursery team.

Once your child is settled, full sessions can begin. If your child would like to bring any comforters, you’re more than welcome to bring them along.

Reading Bags

Each week children choose a book to take home to read with their families. Parents are encouraged to narrate the stories and encourage children recall events and characters. With a reading log, parents are able to share views and opinions of their child’s interest of the chosen book as well as any further support they may request.

Freddiand
Eddy Sleepovers

We aim to further develop children’s language skills by sending either Freddie (Preschool room) or Eddie (Toddler room) home with a child each week. Parents are requested to get children to involve the teddies into their weekend events and to model language throughout. Events would then be recorded into the teddy’s dairies to share with peers upon return to nursery.
